My 50 favourite movies of the decade

You didn’t think I was going to leave you there with just my favourite 20 albums of the noughties, did you? Ooh no, there are loads more lists locked away in my failing memory, if I can only dig them out. So today, I turn my attention to the big screen, in the decade where we got a big multiplex cinema built at the end of our road (how convenient), and in which I went on not one, but two ‘recreational’ film studies courses. I’m not sure the lecturer would wholeheartedly approve of this choice though.

I’ve not included Blade Runner: The Final Cut (Ridley Scott, 2007) because it’s just a new version, even if it is the best version yet, of the best film of all time (let’s not get into discussion about this, it just is, right?). And just a reminder, I’m not claiming this is anything like a list of the best 50 films of the decade, it’s a list of my favourites…

So, let’s go…

50. Anvil! The Story of Anvil

(Sacha Gervasi, 2009)
If the great thing about heavy metal is that it doesn’t take itself seriously, then this film sums up everything that’s great about heavy metal.

49. Be Kind Rewind

(Michel Gondry, 2008)
Very funny idea, and a great performance by Jack Black.

48. Legally Blonde

(Robert Luketic, 2001)
I don’t expect to increase my credibility amongst movie buffs for including this, but it just made me smile. A lot.

47. Vicky Cristina Barcelona

(Woody Allen, 2009)
How long is it since the last Woody Allen film which was this entertaining?

46. 50 First Dates

(Peter Segal, 2004)
sigh
What you have to understand is, Drew Barrymore doesn’t have to do much more than stand there for me to want to go and see the movie.

45. State of Play

(Kevin MacDonald, 2009)
A good thriller. There ain’t many of them around nowadays.

44. About a Boy

(Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz, 2002)
Odd Nick Hornby tale kept quirky enough to work very well indeed.

43. Frost/Nixon

(Ron Howard, 2008)
I didn’t expect this to work. I was kept riveted throughout.

42. Mr. & Mrs. Smith

(Doug Liman, 2005)
Whahey! The Fast Show’s Long Big Punch-Up …with guns! Unintentionally hysterical.

41. There Will Be Blood

(Paul Thomas Anderson, 2008)
Made you feel like you’d just a seen a quite extraordinary movie.

Oh sorry, did I not mention? I’m only doing ten each day. You’ll have to check in on Christmas morning for the top ten, assuming I get up early enough to write it.

Got anything to say? Go ahead and leave a comment!
