I think I’m right in saying I applauded
Oooh, another easy one, but one of the cleverest, simplest and perhaps most archetypal Half Man Half Biscuit songs ever. Turn A Blind Eye is a pastiche of a poem of uncertain provenance about the Nazis being allowed to rise to power. It’s also brilliant. Thanks to Jon W and gNick

Regarding the source of this most wonderful song, I looked this up some time ago. It was not originally intended as a poem as far as I can tell. It was part of a speech or sermon by Pastor Martin Niemöller. It was never published as a poem and there are many versions of it about, which lends credence to the idea that it was something spoken which was picked up on by different people who each gave their own version of it.
Here is a link to one site that gives details of Niemöller, for anyone interested.

It’s Dani Behr, with but a single “n”
It worries me that I possess this information.

I only discovered, quite by accident through posting on another forum the other day what a ‘RoMo’ was.
Do others need clarification on it, or was I confused on my own?

I think it’s time I learned what this meant. I’ve been waiting for this moment. Tell us.

Neil, a scene that passed me (and presumably most ofhers) by, circa the fag end of Brit Pop. Invented and championed by Taylor Parkes, he of WSC’s now – but Melody Maker then and a couple of other music hacks.

Apart from Mansum I hadn’t heard of any of the others – I think therefore we can carbon date my giving up on most of the music press to around ’95

On the subject of useless information and somewhat tenuous links the words of ‘Turn a blind eye’ mention Charles Manson followers and the RoMo movement and there’s a link courtesy of Ben to a list of supposedly RoMo bands one being Mansun. (Try and stay awake). Interestingly enough (?) Mansun’s first single had them titled ‘Manson’ and when they started to get a bit of success they quickly changed the spelling for fear of bad publicity presumably. Is this starting to get a bit Climie Fisher? Personally I thought Mansun were a great band with some excellent prog touches but then again I’ve just finished updating the String Driven Thing wikepedia site.Taste ? who needs ‘em.

I should point out on behalf on T. Parkes, who’s a mate of mine (and a big Biscuits fan these days incidentally), that he didn’t “invent” the RoMo movement. That was Simon Price, now of the Independent, who also wrote the Manics biography before the gods that made the gods were born. Mr Parkes did sort of champion it for a bit, until it became clear that most of the people involved were apparently “tinfoil idiots” and were never going to make a good record. I’d have thought that would have been obvious from the start, but there you go, I guess we all make mistakes when we’re young. Anyway I can vouch that his stories on this subject are top pub entertainment, and make a hilariously convincing case for getting out of the music industry…
