Let me hear you say hosepipe ban

A Shropshire Lad gets its title from an epic poem by AE Housman which I’ve just been told off about for not knowing (apparently it’s really famous). Anyway, it’s nice to be back after a summer off, and I promise there’ll be more frequent additions to the site now than the last few weeks’ pitiable close-season performance. Thanks to gNick and Ian

You’re getting too good, there’s nothing for us to correct.

I think ‘drake’ should be ‘Drake’, ie he’s been taking drugs, sniffing glue and listening to endless Nick Drake.

Isn’t it ‘The hits and the myths’?

And to be really picky: ‘caboodle’.

    (Welcome back, by the way.)

    hello again,

I think that it is “the hits and the myths” .

    keep up the good work,

    s.g.d.

  6. I always heard it as “The wanness in Stromness”. Also, it may be “Columbia Hotel rooms” (without comma), as in the London hotel Oasis trashed many years back (though the comma’d version is just as plausible).

What on earth is “these handtowels belong to my Islamic landlord” about?

apologies in advance but i do believe that (castle) donnington has two n’s, unlike donington (racing circuit). are we plumbing new depths of pedantry yet?

  8. Thanks everyone! I’m going to go with all of the suggestions above except Donington: “myths” is obviously my error, “caboodle” too, and the “wanness” and “Columbia” suggestions, while impossible to tell, are too tempting to ignore…

I always thought it sounded like ‘the hits and the mints’ but my hearing is being destroyed by listening to too much loud music. Pardon?

Michelle – it is definitely Ely, not Ealing. Ely has the same social status as Chatteris

    Bussie,
Shouldn’t that comment have been on the ‘For What Is Chatteris?‘ page?

  12. I reckon “wanness” should be “oneness” as in “togetherness”

    TWO FAT FEET

I would just like to add that the last line is possibly my favourite Nigel lyric ever.

  14. “organise” should not be spelt with a “z”
