Rain, shine or gale force nine, his frames remain intact

D’Ye Ken Ted Moult? is, shall we say, not one of the band’s most complex songs, musically or lyrically. However, unlike this one, few other HMHB songs caused their subject to shoot and kill himself within a few months of its release. Thanks to Matt and Nigel

  1. To kick things off, the lyric sheet on Gez’s site says the line in the middle is “And you’ll pose when everyone knows” but it’s never sounded like that to me …not that I’m particularly confident about my guess (“honesty”) either, which makes little sense.

surely it’s “when all the street knows?”

um … and I also think it’s “wahey!” at the end. Soz.

My first foray into a contribution. I’m with TFF with this one, “when all the street knows” makes sense when coupled with “it’s you who set the pace”, ie. in the street. And “wahey” gets my vote too.

    Plus one on ‘wahey’

Also happy with ‘all … street knows’. Difficult to tell (the line is sung so quickly) but I hear ‘all our street knows’ rather than ‘all the street’.

A couple of queries from the last verse:
In the first line I think ‘draughts’ is plural.

Then at the end I reckon it’s ‘where’ rather than ‘when it’s raining.’ The lyrics sheet insists otherwise on both of these but it hasn’t always been the most reliable of sources.

  6. Good stuff. This one’s proved rather satisfying to get correct. I’ve gone with all of the above except for “our” street, but I’m open to persuasion!

And while we’re at it, frustrated by Justin Bieber getting all the fun, I produced the Ted Moult/Eno Collaboration using the intro and first verse from this track. Enjoy.

I reckon you might have to undo “where” though, I’m sure it’s “when”. If the goalkeepers’ collective want to make something of it I’ll meet them outside for a penalty shoot-out.

Fantastic effort. Really useful website!! Sometimes you just HAVE to know the lyrics. Nigel Blackwell’s lyrics are often an enigma, and funny, too! Well done! keep it up!!!

The Tan Hill Inn, the highest in GB (and surprisingly never mentioned in a HMHB song to my knowledge) has above the bar, THE feather dropped by Mr Moult in the famous TV ad for Everest.

    Dave Cooper

    “A feather acknowledges Newton”!!
D’oh! I’ve been singing “acknowledges beauty” for years.

As for another cracking bit of Biscuit / pub trivia – well done Mr Drake!

@ Dave Cooper: Don’t worry Dave, you’re not alone.

Mr Moult shuffled violently off this mortal coil 24 years ago last week.

Anyone want to buy a signed autobiography?

  13. From Mr. Moult’s Wikipedia entry:

He has been credited with the concept of “Pick-Your-Own” Strawberries at his farm…

    It all comes around.

I think that the “when or where” debate needs revisiting, I still hear “when”.
