Sewage farm an absolute disgrace
Letters Sent would appear to be a collection of the sort of stuff that gets sent to the correspondence page of local papers. Very much along the lines of the genius which is the Framley Examiner, and there’s nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Thanks to Joe

It’s a meaningless one really, I just hear it as “Dear Miss McVeigh”

Martin’s (almost) right – it’s a near certainty that Nigel’s referring to “Miss McVey”, as in Esther McVey, former TV/radio presenter and generally irritating cow who’s stood for election as a prospective Tory MP on the Wirral on several occasions.
Thankfully, she’s failed in her quest to be elected to Westminster thus far, but only eternal vigilance will keep it that way. Be alert!

The most unusual tribute to Leonard Cohen ever at the end there?

I’d always assumed it was “Dear Miss (or maybe Ms) McVeigh.” A reference to the mother of the Oklahoma bomber, Timothy McVeigh. Timothy McVeigh’s parents were religious, although they divorced when he was 10, hence the “Miss or Ms.” I assumed that the suggestion in the lyrics was that it was being forced to attend school choir in his early childhood that warped his mind and turned him into a terrorist.

Now that the execrable Ms.McVey is finally confirmed as the elected representative of the people of my birthplace*, I am at pains to point out that NB57 said this song has nothing to do with her, and he’d go for “McVeigh” as the preferred spelling.
*I always said that Upton would regret not joining the borough of Wallasey in the 1931 referendum.
