The Lux Familiar Cup: Semi-Finals – Draw
For the last draw of the competition (unless we do one for home dressing room in the final), it’s over to the Lux Familiar Cup’s sumptuous headquarters in Zeal Monachorum, where a travelling army of synthetic supporters is paying homage to their newly-elected President. Over to you, Sepp.
The matches will be released for voting on 5 June. Watch this space, but in the meantime, your comments on the draw below!

Well, it means that one of my two favourites will make the final. Still rooting for the highly dependable Chatteris; but wish it was playing TLATEOTT in the final rather than the semis.
Although I’m not a big fan of it, I hope ACP wins out in the other game.
Nice entertaining draw too; just glad that the FA didn’t get wind of Mr Blatter’s involvement else they may have put forward a motion to halt proceedings…..

The trouble with these type of Cup competitions is that they get less interesting as they progress. Your favourites get eliminated, there are less polls to vote in, and when the end comes you’re left with a feeling of anti-climax. Not to mention the inherent injustice that comes with the element of luck provided by the draw itself…
…so…
What we really need is a League-type competition – where every song gets to play every other song (home and away
). Only when you’ve been through the hard slog of a 260-odd game season can you call yourself the real champion.

A bit like that odd phase in the World Cup where all of a sudden there aren’t games every day and those nice colourful fans from (name small country) have all gone home.
I think the real trouble is that it’s impossible to nail down a favourite HMHB song. Last time I tried, I came up with nearly fifty. They may all sound the same, but lyrically, all of human life is there. So the winner ends up being not the best one, but the least quirky. I don’t think there’s anything especially quirky about the semi-finalists, although the mayflies on a Berkshire trout river would probably tell you a different story.

I think certain people have been assuming that this competition would somehow magically produce a song which can be said to represent all that’s great about the band, all on its own, when of course no such song exists. They fear that the winner will become the Chosen One, which all unbelievers might be subjected to in the future as The Place To Start in becoming an appreciator of all things HMHB. And they’re concerned that the winner might be Chatteris, a brilliant song but something of an oddity in the HMHB songbook, musically and lyrically.
Here’s the thing though: our little “tournament”, which is just killing time until we get a new album, isn’t designed to find a song which somehow represents the band. Because there’s no such thing …just like there’s no one song which represents any band with a decent amount of creativity and longevity. You’d need at least an album’s worth of material to do that, and the “Last 32″ here wouldn’t be a bad place to start. And I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to play the four semi-finalists to someone as a good introduction to the band.

Are we non believers that obvious! No, I do have to be thankful to Chatteris for one thing, making me realise that the finest moment in the Biscuit canon is Trad Arr.Tune and NOT A Country Pactice, although that may be me trying to desensitise myself before the results come through.
