With my little stick of Ayers Rock
“I think there’s a future for you in Tortured Artist circles, Nigel” says Saint John at the end of Mr Cave’s a Window Cleaner Now. The title’s from this and the song itself is a comment on grim Nick Cave stuff like this, although thankfully, somewhat more listenable.

The Birthday Party song sounds like someone falling down the stairs carrying musical equipment.
I’d forgotten just how much I dislike Formby; by the way, the opening line is sampled on Big Audio Dynamite’s Dragon Town on their album Megatop Phoenix, an album which also sampled Bernard Cribbins and Peter Sellers. Ecstasy has a lot to answer for.

There’s a lyrical “nod” to “Big Jesus Trash Can” but I reckon it’s probably modelled on this Birthday Party track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNpKhsuIvNQ – I love all that noisy crap myself, but I can see how it’s, um, an acquired taste. NB’s Cave impression is really something, though.
It’s very obvious to anyone familiar with George Formby, but it’s probably worth pointing out that all the lyrics here are lifted from Formby songs, or else they’re Nick Cave lines tweaked to include a bit of GF’s patented cutesy-Northern hateability.
