I hadn’t heard Poly Styrene’s Black Christmas before – that’s a belter. I also looked up efforts by The Killers, Glasvegas, Low, Sufjan Stevens, Galaxi 500 and Hurts which were good, although as ever left me wondering how the term “alternative” can still be used; the Hurts one (“all I want for Christmas is New Year’s Day”) could just as easily be by Westlife.

i can’t believe this song doesnt get more airplay what with ‘cool’ djs always looking for alternative xmas songs and not everyone can play fairytale of new york every day. it’s perfect. bells, children’s choir, mentions of pine and jingle bells, heartwarming and genuinely amusing. it gives people who are annoyed at those who hate xmas for no reason a much-needed acerbic boost.
