MATCH REPORT

Ipswich Town 1 Birmingham C 0

Very poor match, below par performance, great result. Maybe the gods are
on our side this year. We deserved at least a draw (Birmingham were a
strong side) but we’ve played better and lost. The defence were
magnificent, and they had to be with Burley’s rather dodgy tactics and
team selection at the moment. You couldn’t fault Richard, who was
commanding in the air, but in truth he had little to test him, as the
four regular defenders were so solid. Dyer put in a couple of
maginificent runs and a couple of marvellous tackles (he’s so quick it’s
frightening) but looked out of position and needed Thetis to cover for
him too often. Petta was in and out of the game, Tanner was just out of
it, and Matt couldn’t stand the pace of running the whole midfield. He
looked to me like he was utterly exhausted towards the end (he even
pulled up for a moment – worrying). Scowcroft battled and for that alone
he’s becoming one of the heroes of the team all around the ground – who’d
have thought it. Abou was lost. Funnily enough, our best two efforts
(Petta’s magnificent goal, which looks just as good on TV, and Abou’s
header against the post) were both from players who otherwise could have
done better. Difficult to pick a MotM but I’d go for Thetis just over
Scowcroft.

Some ratings:
